WESTMALLE
WESTMALLE BRAND
Brouwerij der Trappisten van Westmalle, (a.k.a. Westmalle Brewery), is a Trappist Brewery within the walls of the Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Heart of Westmalle in Belgium. Founded in 1794 by Monks of the Order of Cistercians, monks of Westmalle Abbey have dedicated themselves to a communal life of prayer and work – including the highly regarded cheese dairy and brewery.
On 22 April, 1836 the monastery was elevated to the official status of Trappist abbey. At the same time a number of monastic rules, that had been followed since the 17th century at the first Trappist Abbey of La Trappe, were re-introduced. One of these rules allowed the monks to drink one measure of cider or table beer each day. Westmalle opted for beer, the more popular drink in their own region.

Westmalle Triple Beer
Westmalle Tripel (9.5%) is a clear Trappist beer, golden-yellow in colour, with amazingly fruity aromas of ripe banana and a lovely, subtle nose of hops. This full-mouthed beer offers finesse and elegance, with a mild taste and a creamy mouth feel, yielding bitter notes supported by fruit aromas. Enjoy the lingering, dry finish.

Westmalle Extra Beer
Westmalle Extra is brewed by the monks for consumption with their meals. It’s a top-fermented 4.8% golden ale designed to be thirst-quenching, full of fruity aromas, and full-bodied. Brewed only with whole-cone noble hops and, unlike the Tripel and Dubbel, without any brewing sugar additions. Extra is bottled unpasteurised and is refermented in the bottle, too. This beer was previously exclusively for the monks, with lucky guests of the abbey occasionally being offered a glass.

Westmalle Dubble Beer
Westmalle Dubbel (7%) is a dark red-brown beer with a rich, complex taste thanks to re-fermentation in the bottle. You pick up touches of caramel, malt and fruity esters reminiscent of ripe banana. The beer pearls beneath a covering of dense, cream-coloured froth. A lovely lace pattern forms on the inside of the glass once emptied. The long, dry finish of this balanced, mild Trappist beer will stay with you.
